Why Taos....The town of Taos is in northern NM, 110 miles NE of Albuquerque. Taos' elevation is about 7,000 feet and has a population of 5,000. Surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which includes Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in NM at 13,100 feet this high desert area shows the Southwest in all its beauty. The air is thin, the humidity is low and the sun is bright.
Home also to the Taos Pueblo, a multi-storied adobe building that has been inhabitated for more than 1,000 years. We have world class museums and galleries, the historic Taos Plaza, the historic San Francisco de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, 8 miles northwest of Taos. The latter spans 650 feet above the river.
Tourism is the dominant sector of Taos economy. As a result, the majority of the population works in the service industry. More than 20% of the population live below poverty and the median personal income is $26,000. In contrast, the average home price is $289,000 and, according to the State Housing Authority, 90% of the people who live and work in Taos cannot afford a home of their own.
Habitat for Humanity of Taos, Inc. works in partnership with people from all walks of life to build houses, hope, and community with people in need, and by so doing, witness God's love in action.
HFHT is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical, nonprofit Christian housing ministry building decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. Habitat Taos has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
Volunteer work groups, from all over the country and the world, and local volunteers constitute nearly all labor required to build our Habitat houses. These visiting groups, individuals, businesses and corporate donors provide the funding and building materials required to complete a home, as well as grants and our Habitat ReStore. Habitat home buying partners also contribute 500 or more “sweat equity” hours into their home and the homes of other Habitat partners. The homes are not free and are sold at no profit; owners receive a 30-year interest-free mortgage. We hold some of those mortgages and those payments go into a revolving fund to help finance additional houses.
